Abzats

«Abzats» is an anti prize which was established by the newspaper «Knizhnoe Obozrenie» (Book Review) and the General Directorate of International Book Exhibitions and Fairs for the worse publications that don’t meet the requirements of present-day book publishing in the terms of translation, editing and proof-reading. It is awarded to those publishers who don’t revere their art trade properly and issue books-cripples.

«Abszats» is presented in four nominations: «The Worse Translation», «The Worst Editing», «The worst Proof-Reading» and «Full Abzats» (for complete violation of all norms of publication). Such «prize-winners“ are determined by a special council of experts on the grounds of readers’ opinions, which are sent to the editing office of the newspaper «Knizhnoe Obozrenie».

For the first time «Abzats» was awarded at the XIV MIBF in the fall of 2001. Since 2002 the «Anti-Prize» has been presented at the National Book Fair «Books of Russia». «Abzats» looks like a «swanny-looking mark 2» figurine made of bronze in the form of a pen broken twice upon a crumpled sheet of paper. The author of the figurine is Moscow talented sculptor Vladimir Trulov who created the prizes for all competitions held with a support of General Directorate of International Book Exhibitions and Fairs.
